Free Weights vs. Weight Machines
When it comes to exercising, free weights are a great way to build strength and lose a few pounds. Free weights provide you with more natural resistance than exercise machines. That’s because the components of exercise equipment are fixed movements. They are designed to move a specific way. However, with free weights, your body dictates where the resistance comes from. This creates a well-rounded workout, allowing your body to use and build muscles that exercise machines don’t necessarily allow.
The area at which a joint is allowed to move is also known as range of motion. Exercise machines don’t give you complete range of motion. They isolate a specific movement to build specific muscles. Free weights allow natural movement and a wider range of motion. The wider the range of motion, the harder it is for your body to perform that movement. When you work out, you want your body to work hard. By using free weights, you’re increasing the difficulty of your workout and using more muscles in your body.
Free weights also help you build more muscles involved in athletic movement. With free weights, your balance and coordination come into play. Weight machines balance everything for you. There is less resistance on your body overall when you use a weight machine. With free weights, there is no added support other than the support provided by your body, allowing more muscles to come into play during your workout. As a result, in addition to building muscle, you’re also improving your natural balance and coordination.
One problem with weight machines is that they don’t utilize muscles within a large range of motion. They only target very specific muscles. By building muscles using free weights, your overall strength will be built in that general area. For example, by doing a simple bicep curl with a free weight, you’re using your entire arm, including your fingers and wrists. However, if you use a weight machine to perform the same exercise, the machine isolates your movement so much that only your bicep is being targeted. Even though both weight machines and free weights can help you build your bicep, free weights build your bicep and other muscles surrounding that general muscle area.
Weight training is a great way to get in shape and reduce your weight. However, there are added benefits to using free weights over weight machines when you’re at the gym. Free weights give you a larger range of motion, allowing you to work out entire areas of your body. Weight machines are just as beneficial when it comes to building muscle and losing weight. They just don’t provide a large range of motion. As a result, only targeted areas of your body are being worked out. If you want an overall workout, hit the free weights.
