Information about Calories in a Pound of Fat
Calories are at the forefront of our diet and weight loss; and when it comes to weight loss, losing pounds of fat is the ultimate goal. So, how many calories are there in a pound of fat? Since we exercise to burn calories and fat is what we’re looking to burn, exactly how many calories do we have to burn in relation to each pound of fat?
It’s been estimated that there are 3,500 calories per pound of fat. In other words, you need to burn 3,500 calories to lose one pound of fat. But it’s not that simple. Your body needs to actually burn 3,500 extra calories to burn a pound of fat. Your body burns about 2,000 calories each day just to function properly. So, if you eat a normal diet but don’t participate in daily exercise, your body isn’t burning anything more than 2,000 calories a day. And if you’re eating more than 2,000 calories a day, your body is storing the excess calories as fat, adding to the pounds of fat you already need to burn.
So, in order to lose the weight and burn the appropriate calories per pound of fat, you need to eat a healthy diet and work out. If you don’t work out, and you’re in a habit of eating more than 2,000 calories a day, you’re only going to gain more weight. Working out will burn additional calories and start attacking the calories in each pound of fat on your body.
But, working out and eating a sensible diet isn’t as easy as it sounds. That’s because each of our bodies process food and burn calories differently. For some, burning calories is as easy as breathing. That’s because some people have a high metabolism. However, others have a very slow metabolism and burn calories at a lower rate, causing a back log of calories to burn. That’s because their bodies aren’t burning calories as quickly as other people do. Even if they eat a sensible diet, people with slow metabolisms seem to gain weight easier.
So, many people would say the logical solution is to cut back drastically on your food intake so that the calories your body burns are the existing fat calories in your body. In some cases, this is a viable solution. However, you never want to starve yourself. Starving yourself is counter-productive and very unhealthy. Your body needs specific nutrients that it can’t get from simply burning fat. So, don’t focus on the fat calories in each pound of fat. Count your calories carefully, eat a well-balanced diet, and exercise regularly.
The calories in a pound of fat can be deceiving when trying to lose weight. If you focus just on the calories in each pound of fat, you aren’t looking at the whole picture. If you want to lose weight, you need to watch your calorie intake, exercise, and keep your metabolism in mind. As unfair as it may be, if you have a slow metabolism, you may need to work out a bit more than others.
