Exercise – Why You Should Start Now!
Exercise is a vital part of our everyday lives. It provides us with energy and improves our health, which in tern allows us to be more productive at home, work, and school. Exercise keeps our bodies in shape and our minds alert. Without exercise, we’d live shorter, unsatisfying lives.
So why do so few people exercise each day?
There are hundreds of excuses why people don’t exercise, but probably the one excuse most frequently used is the “I’m too busy to exercise” line. It is true that we live in busy times. Our time is consumed with work, family, commuting, and other details of life. And by the time we finish our daily routine and chores, we are too tired to even think about exercising. But the fact of the matter is each day you don’t exercise, the harder it gets to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The Opposite of Exercise
Think about it; it is a thousand times easier to abuse your body than it is to keep it fit. It’s a lot easier to drive through a fast food restaurant than it is to prepare a home-cooked, healthy meal. And it’s definitely easier to put your feet up on the coffee table, grab a bag of potato chips, and watch a few hours of television after a long day of work than it is to go the gym or run a mile or two. These are just a few examples of why many of us don’t exercise regularly. But, regardless of the excuse, if you don’t exercise regularly, all the unhealthy activity you do (i.e. eat fast food, sit around and watch TV) will build up and can lead to serious health issues, disease, and quite possibly death. That’s why it’s vital that you incorporate exercise into your daily life.
How to Ease Exercise into Your Daily Routine
We’ve already discussed excuses people give for not exercising and the danger of not exercising regularly. Now it’s time to look at painless ways to integrate exercise into your life. Here are a few suggestions:
Exercise at Home
You don’t need a gym membership to exercise. You don’t even need expensive gym equipment or an exercise bike to work out. All you need is motivation, and time set aside to exercise. Find about 15 to 20 minutes each day where you can do a few push-ups, sit-ups, run a few blocks, or ride your bike around the neighborhood. By setting aside a few minutes each day to exercise, you’ll be forming a nice exercise routine and helping your body get in shape. As time passes, increase the amount of time you set aside each day to exercise. You’ll find that once you get going, the easier it will be to maintain and improve your daily exercise routine.
Exercise at Work
Believe it or not, you can exercise at work. Now before you start doing push-ups under your desk, you have to remember that you’re at work, not a gym. So, during work hours, work. But during your breaks and your lunch, exercise. There are a few simple exercises you can do to stay healthy while at work. For starters, use the stairs whenever possible. Stair climbing is a great way to get your heart rate up and your blood pumping. On your lunches and breaks, walk. Grab your portable mp3 player or radio and walk a few blocks. Walking is a simple exercise you can do without having to purchase a gym membership, exercise equipment, or even break a sweat. And finally, stand up and stretch throughout the work day. Stretching may not seem like exercise, but in fact, it’s a great way to keep the blood circulating in your body. Sitting down for hours on end can lead to circulation problems and other ailments. By simply standing up and stretching your arms, legs, back, and fingers, you can improve the blood circulation in your body.
Exercise is an activity everyone should do. It helps you maintain and improve your healthy, and also balances out the not-so-healthy activity and eating many of us just can’t avoid. If you’re not already exercising daily, or even weekly, make some time today to do a few sit-ups and push-ups. The sooner you start, the easier it will be to improve and maintain your health in the long run.
