The Nutrition of Nutrition
Your nutrition level effects how your body reacts to different stimuli. Stimuli can be anything from exercising and sports activities to simply walking from your car to your front door. Without good nutrition, your body can weaken and fall victim to diseases and illnesses easier. Proper nutrition is the key to getting peak performance out of your body and staying healthy. Even if you exercise daily, you still need to keep nutrition in mind.
Proper Nutrition and You
If you want to keep your body healthy, the nutrition value of your food is what counts. When you’re at the grocery store, check out the nutritional information found on each label. New U.S. legislation mandates manufacturers to disclose detailed nutritional information on their packaging. When reviewing the nutrition facts of your food items, be sure to:
- Read the serving size of the food item and consider it when reviewing other nutritional facts of the food.
- Check the calorie count of the food item. There’s a simple formula you can use to get an approximate daily calorie count, but it varies based on your activity level. If you’re not an active person, take your existing weight and multiply it by 14. If you’re somewhat active, take your existing weight and multiply it by 17. If you’re a highly active person take your existing weight and multiply it by 20. The end result is your estimated daily calorie intake.
- Keep an eye out for sugar. Sugars are high in calories and are found in foods you wouldn’t necessarily assume to contain sugar.
- Discriminate between good vs. bad fats. Bad fats are saturated fats and trans-fats. Good fats are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. When looking at nutrition facts, keep an eye on both.
- Limit salt quantity. Too much salt can raise your blood pressure and lead to other health ailments. So watch out for processed foods, which are high in sodium.
Nutritional Supplements
As important as nutrition is to everyone, sometimes you just don’t have time to make sure you’re getting all your daily nutrients. So, if nutrition is that last thing on your mind, at least take nutritional supplements.
Nutritional supplements are an acceptable way to get the nutrients your body needs. Your body loses nutrients each day through the activities we do. Even if we aren’t working out, our bodies still lose nutrients through our normally bodily functions. In order to keep your nutrition levels up, you need to replenish the nutrients you lose each day. By taking nutritional supplements you can help your body function at a more optimal level. And if you work out daily, you definitely need to replenish your nutrients. When you work out, you lose valuable vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients at a quicker rate. If you want to stay healthy, keep nutrition in mind and take nutritional supplements.
However, if you’re going to take nutritional supplements, you need to be aware that not all supplements are the same. Cheaper vitamins and supplements aren’t made of high-quality ingredients. Instead, they are made of petroleum by-products. Also, if you want the best nutritional supplements possible, take natural supplements. Synthetic supplements lack the nutrition level natural supplements naturally contain.
Nutrition is something we should all be concerned about. Without the right nutrients, our bodies can fall victim to illness and disease easier, and weaken our overall health. If you’re concerned about your health, read the nutrition facts on the packaging of the food you buy and take nutritional supplements. Your health depends on it.
