Childhood Obesity – A Problem on the Rise
Childhood obesity is a growing concern. As obesity nationwide increases, so does the instance of childhood obesity. A child needs to eat well and participate in physical activity, as do adults. However, if a child adapts bad eating habits and is resistant to physical activity early on in his/her life, childhood obesity can occur and lead to a life of obesity.
An obese child is unhealthy and more susceptible to illnesses, including diabetes. If you’re a parent and concerned about your child’s health, watch what he/she eats. Your child should eat a balanced diet low in calories and fat. And avoid feeding your children fast food. It is a significant factor in childhood obesity. Make sure your child eats his/her fruits and vegetables, and isn’t sneaking candy. You want to instill good eating habits in your children early on and teach them the value of eating healthy. Many children fall victim to childhood obesity because they are allowed to eat junk food and don’t have a proper diet. If you want to keep your child in the best health possible, feed him healthy foods and teach him the importance of good nutrition
Childhood obesity can be traced back to bad eating habits, but it can also be traced to inactivity. Video games have become a dominant entertainment medium for children. Even though playing video games can improve hand-eye coordination (as some experts say) the bottom line is it doesn’t involve physical activity. If your child spends hours watching TV or playing video games, he/she is not getting the exercise he/she needs. Every child needs to participate in physical activity. Children need to keep their bodies in shape just like adults do. However, that doesn’t mean you need to sign your children up for a gym membership. Just encourage them to turn off the TV or video game and participate in more physical activity. Teach them to ride a bike early on and go on family bike rides. If they show interest in a sport, sign them up for a sports team. Youth soccer, football, and baseball teams are a great way to help your child stay in shape and protect him/her from childhood obesity.
However, not all children are into sports or physical activity. Some would rather read a book. As important as reading is to a child’s development, it’s also important to get them physically active. So, encourage your children to balance their reading/TV watching/video game playing with some sort of physical activity. Offer to take your child and his/her friends to the beach or a public pool for a day of fun in the water. Even if you have a hectic schedule, make time each week to participate in some sort of physical activity with your child. Toss a baseball around with your child or play a one-on-one basketball game at the park. The sooner you get your child into physical activity, the better his/her chances will be of avoiding childhood obesity, and living a healthier, longer life.
Childhood obesity is devastating the health of our children. Overweight children are falling victim to illnesses that once only occurred in adulthood. Keep your children safe. Feed your children a healthy diet, teach them about the importance of eating healthy, and get them involved in physical activity. Don’t let your child fall victim to childhood obesity.
