Obesity in America

Obesity in America

Obesity in America is a growing problem. More and more people are not paying attention to their diet and not exercising. As a result, obesity now affects millions of people in America and the number continues to increase.

Obesity in America – Reasons Why

Obesity is a result of poor diet, not exercising, genetics, and some medical conditions. As much as we’d like to be able to change our genetics, we are stuck with our genetic make up. If you have a family history of obesity, you need to be even more aware and careful with your diet and exercise. We all wish we had high metabolisms and didn’t have to watch every ounce of food we eat, but each of our bodies process food differently.

Obesity in America – How to Fight It

If you want to keep the weight off and help curb obesity in America, you need to watch what you eat. Watch out for foods high in calories. High calorie foods require more energy and time to digest. Since high calorie foods take so long to digest, these food items remain in the body longer. The more high-calorie foods you eat, the more excess food your body is storing for future processing.

Fast food and highly processed foods are very high in calories and should be avoided at all costs. The fast pace of living that many Americans are submerged in has increased the consumption of fast food. As fast, convenient, and tasty as fast food may be, eating too much can lead to obesity. Instead of fast food, think ahead and pack a healthy lunch and snacks. Replace those fries with carrot sticks. Leave the burger at the drive-thru and make yourself a sandwich. As convenient as fast food may be, it has directly increased obesity in America.

However, fast food isn’t the only reason for obesity in America. Lack of exercise has also lead to the increase in obesity. Exercise helps keep you healthy and your weight down. However, millions of Americans don’t exercise. Again, the fast pace of American life makes it difficult to make time to exercise. But the fact of the matter is, if you don’t exercise, your chances of becoming obese are higher. If you don’t currently exercise, but are seriously concerned about your health, start as soon as possible. If you need motivation, buddy up with a friend who currently exercises and start working out together. It’s very easy to talk yourself out of exercising, especially if you’ve had a long day at work. By having a work out partner, you can help each other stay motivated and stick to a workout routine.

Obesity in America – Are You Afflicted?

It’s quite possible that you may be one of the millions of Americans plagued with obesity and not even know it. Health professionals determine obesity based on your body mass index (also know as your BMI). Your BMI is your muscle-to-fat ratio and is calculated based on your height and weight. If you have a BMI of 25.0, you are considered overweight. If you have a BMI of 30.0, you are considered obese. The minute your BMI reaches 25.0, it’s time to take a serious look at your diet and start exercising.

Obesity in America is increasing at an astounding rate. If you want to help curb obesity in America and drastically improve your health, watch what you eat and exercise. Don’t become a victim of obesity.
